Spread. Distributed from the European part of Russia (where it is rare) to the south of Siberia and the Far East.

Wintering. It hibernates mainly in the nesting area, sometimes making irregular migrations.

Description of Buturlin. This close relative blue titdistributed mainly in Siberia, where it is found almost to the Sea of Japan. In the European part of Russia, it lives in noticeable numbers only in its eastern half, in the regions adjacent to the Urals, and along the valley of the Middle and Lower Volga. To the west of here, only a few couples meet in summer (up to Belarus and the southern parts of the Leningrad region). In autumn and winter, when these titmouses begin to wander, they come across in common flocks of titmouses and outside the nesting area, even in Western Europe.

The habits of the blue tit are typical of titmouse and are very similar to the habits of the green, but coloration she is so characteristic that this bird is immediately noticed even in a large flock of titmouse: white head, throat and chest, only through the eye and along the abdomen is a dark blue stripe. The back and sides of the neck, back, wings and tail are grayish-blue. There is a wide white stripe on the wings, and white spots (edges) on the tips of the flight feathers. The outer rudders are also white. The appearance of the blue tit is very similar to the green one, but larger (up to 14 centimeters long), and its tail is noticeably longer. In the female, all blue tones are paler, and the young, in addition, have a grayish tone on the crown.

The winter lifestyle of blue tit is not much different from that of their close relatives. By kind nutrition blue tit are more herbivorous than green ones, and in winter they readily eat various seeds. From spring and all summer, their food is exclusively insects.

Blue tit differs markedly from green in its nesting tendencies and summer lifestyle. She loves dense willow groves and reed thickets along the banks of rivers and lakes. The proximity of water in summer is absolutely essential for these birds. Already from early spring, they begin to gather to such places for nesting.

Nest they are in the hollows of old willows, alders and other coastal trees, mostly in the most impassable places of swampy thickets. The nest structure, color and number of eggs are very similar to the blue tit. Often the hair of a water rat is used for the lining of the nest.

Before nesting begins (very early), males loudly shout out their various urges, ending in a silvery trill, and, fluttering their wings, fly from branch to branch. Many of the urges of blue tit are quite similar to voice other tits. You can often hear a subtle whistling and a trill, reminiscent of the voice of waxwings, shouts “Tyrr. tyrr. "And an alarming sharp urge" scoop. scoop. ”(Similar to the call of a great tit).
