At the 2nd year of life, they grow tail feathers up to 24 cm long. From the 3rd year of life, their plumage becomes white, and two of the central tail feathers of 12 lengthen up to 30 cm. Borneo and probably also on about. Sumba in most young males after molting has white plumage.

Lifestyle

Paradise flycatchers feed on insects, hunting for their prey more often in flight at a height of 1-2 m above the ground. They rarely look for insects in the foliage.

In dry weather, they like to swim, flying several times a day to shallow streams to drink water. Then they climb the branches and begin to care for their plumage.

Reproduction

The nesting season for monogamous birds begins in Thailand in early March and lasts until mid-July. The first heralds of moving populations arrive at the end of March in the Nepalese Terai. Adult males are the first to catch the eye as they tirelessly chase with their long white feathers the mosquitoes that begin to breed this season. The nesting season begins here somewhat later, by mid-April, and continues until August.

Soon they begin to search for a suitable nesting place in forests and groves. They examine tall bushes and stunted trees, picking up shelters protected from the sun and nest-raiders. Once having found it, they vigorously defend their nesting site in relation to other nesting pairs in the immediate vicinity. Most often, they build their fragile, well-camouflaged nests suspended in forks at a height of 2-3 m above the ground.

Birds need about one week to build their cone-shaped nest from thin roots, moss, dry grass and small leaves, which they fasten with cobwebs and gently stuff the inside with fibers. Females lay 3-4 pale pink eggs - no more than one egg per day - which both parents hatch alternately for about 2 weeks. When the chicks hatch, the parents feed them for 13-14 days in the nest. When the chicks become independent, the parents begin to circle around the nest with loud calls and singing until the chicks dare to jump out of the nest. Parents feed them in a dense bush for several days.

As soon as monsoon clouds return from Terai in Nepal and India in mid-September, paradise flycatchers fly south to their winter quarters with their chicks.
