Taxonomic status:

View status: full species (sometimes nominal subspecies)

This taxon is a subspecies of Zoothera [lunulata or heinei] (sensu lato) by some authors

Habitat

Earthen chestnut-backed thrush (Zoothera (Geokichla) dohertyi) - a bird from the genus Earthbirds. Leads predominantly a terrestrial lifestyle. Endemic to the islands of Lombok, Timor and several other Lesser Sunda Islands (Malay Archipelago). The species name was given in honor of the outstanding American biologist William Doherty. On the listed islands, the bird inhabits high-mountain semi-evergreen low-mountain and mountain moist forests at an altitude of 500 to 2500 meters above sea level.

Food

Birds are mostly solitary but may congregate at a food source. Thrushes usually feed on the ground: they catch insects, spiders, collect worms and mollusks, sometimes eat various fruits and berries.

Threats to existence

Despite the status of a rare (and only in some areas - common) species, until recently, the thrush was massively caught and sold for its beautiful voice, probably this became one of the main factors in the reduction of its population. This species, according to the latest data, on the island of Lombok has already been completely destroyed, and almost destroyed on the island of Sumbawa, where there is a village, all whose inhabitants are engaged exclusively in catching songbirds.

Conservation status

In captivity, this species is kept in a number of zoos and bird nurseries, including the zoos of Bristol and Chester, the Foundation for the Conservation of Wildlife. Darrell (Jersey) and at the Weddesdon Menor poultry nursery (Buckinghamshire, England). Several of these institutions have achieved bird breeding. In total, in 2011, there were about 100 individuals in captivity. Earthen chestnut-backed thrush Included in the IUCN Red List in the Near Threatened Species category.
